Preheat the oven to 250°c. Clean off chestnuts with a clean cloth. Using a small sharp knife cut an X into one side of each chestnut. Doing so will allow the steam to escape while they are cooking, it is important not to omit this step, otherwise the chestnuts could explode in the oven.
Arrange chestnuts on a baking tray or in a shallow pan, with the cut sides up. Roast in for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the shells will burst open, and the chestnut will be golden brown. Sprinkle with salt and allow to cool a little before pealing them.
